What If I Need a Revision After Bariatric Surgery?

Revision bariatric surgery

When you make the monumental decision to undergo bariatric surgery for massive weight loss, you expect results and an improvement in your health and quality of life. Yet, some patients struggle to achieve the desired weight loss and may even have significant health problems due to a failed procedure. Dr V. Kuzinkovas understands this is devastating and has helped many people reach a healthy size through revision bariatric surgery.

Revision weight loss surgery is a unique problem that requires an innovative approach. Regardless of who performed your initial procedure or which hospital, our surgeon can help you get your weight loss and health back on track.

How Do I Know If I Need Revision Surgery?

Gastric bypass or metabolic surgery typically leads to a 65 percent reduction in excess weight within 18 months. You may need revision bariatric surgery if your primary procedure fails to provide significant weight loss or causes further health problems. This “failure” could mean you did not lose at least 50 percent of the weight expected post-surgery, or your weight loss was followed by regaining the weight in part or full. A failed bariatric surgery can have severe consequences for your health. You may experience food intolerance and struggle to eat solid foods, lower quality of life and other health concerns linked to your procedure.

If your initial surgery did not lead to the expected results or you experienced complications, a revision surgery might be beneficial to improve your quality of life and ensure optimal weight loss. Your bariatric surgery may have failed due to several factors, such as the wrong type of metabolic surgery or an incorrect technique. Sometimes stretching of the gastric pouch can occur. Depending on your circumstances, revisional weight loss surgery may be performed as one procedure.

At Advanced Surgicare, our patients are seen for many follow-up appointments to ensure they reach their weight loss and lifestyle goals safely and efficiently.
