Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass in Sydney

Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass Surgery SydneyOmega-Loop is a simplified version of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. This technique alters gut hormones that cause hunger cues and restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold in one sitting. Omega-Loop gastric bypass provides safe and successful results with significant weight loss, and our comprehensive program at Advanced Surgicare ensures long-lasting outcomes.

Dr V. Kuzinkovas is an experienced obesity surgeon in Sydney who offers advanced laparoscopic, upper gastro-intestinal and bariatric procedures, including the Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass approach.

Losing weight with bariatric surgery is an ongoing journey that requires additional steps and a commitment to healthier lifestyle choices for the rest of your life. Altering your lifestyle may be the most challenging part, but our patients agree the work is worth the results. Successful bariatric patients lose most of their excess weight, and comorbid health issues tend to resolve with weight loss and improved diet and exercise. Dr. Kuzinkovas and his team can help you take control of your health and body size.

How Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass Surgery Works

Omega-Loop gastric bypassWeight loss surgery with the Omega-Loop gastric bypass approach reduces the stomach pouch to restrict food consumption. The larger stomach remains in the body and still produces digestive juices. The procedure is a “mini” version of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that uses one connection instead of two to connect the reduced stomach pouch to the small intestine. Re-routing the stomach to skip past the duodenum and jejunum (the upper section of the small intestine that absorbs most nutrients and water from food) allows patients to feel full while eating less and reduces calorie absorption for optimal weight loss.

Omega-Loop gastric bypass surgery requires less surgical time, a shorter recovery and involves fewer risks than the Roux-en-Y approach.

Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass Procedure Details

Dr V. Kuzinkovas performs the Omega-Loop laparoscopically while the patient is under general anesthesia. He starts by making five small incisions (5-12mm in length) in the abdomen and inserts surgical instruments fitted with lighted cameras. Dr. Kuzinkovas guides these tools to create a thin gastric tube (about 30-50 ml) and staples the top of the stomach to form a smaller gastric pouch. Our obesity surgeon connects the stomach pouch to a loop of the small intestine that bypasses the duodenum and 150-200cm of the proximal part of the bowel. At the end of surgery, Dr. Kuzinkovas closes the incisions with sutures, and the patient begins recovery.

Omega-loop gastric bypass surgery is reversible, but it is rarely necessary or desired.

What to Expect After Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass Surgery

Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass RecoveryPatients must follow a strict liquid diet for several days after bariatric surgery. You may then transition to solid foods as your body adjusts to the anatomical changes in the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Kuzinkovas encourages patients to move around as soon as they feel physically able to prevent blood clots and promote healing.

Advanced Surgicare provides detailed instructions to follow after obesity surgery at our Sydney office. Our nutrition and psychological counseling program can help patients prevent weight regain after their procedure.
