Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass in Sydney
Omega-Loop gastric bypass surgery is a simplified version of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. It works by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and by altering gut hormones that affect appetite control. Weight loss results with Omega-Loop gastric bypass have been proven to be both safe and successful.
At Advanced Surgicare, Dr. V. Kuzinkovas offers Omega-Loop gastric bypass surgery to patients in Sydney and the surrounding area who are ready to take control of their obesity and health.
How Omega-Loop Gastric Bypass Works
Omega-Loop is sometimes referred to as mini gastric bypass as it involves only making one anastomosis (connection) instead of two like during Roux-en-Y. During Omega-Loop, the stomach pouch is reduced in size and interconnected to the small intestine. This causes the food ingested to bypass the duodenum and the first section of the small intestine. This bypass results in earlier satiety (feeling of fullness) and fewer calories absorbed, in turn leading to weight loss. The larger part of the stomach is detached but remains in the body and continues to produce digestive juices that help with digestion.
Because Omega-Loop involves making one anastomosis instead of two, it can be performed in less time than Roux-en-Y and involves less risks and a shorter recovery.
Gastric Bypass Procedure Details
Omega-Loop is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia. To begin, five small incisions (typically 5 to 12 mm in length) are made on the abdomen. Small surgical instruments are inserted through these incisions. The top of the stomach is stapled, forming a thin tube (approximately 30 to 50 ml in size) that becomes the new and smaller stomach pouch. The stomach pouch is sewn to a loop of the small intestine, bypassing the duodenum and approximately 150 to 200 cm of the bowel. Once the surgery is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures.
What to Expect After Surgery
Immediately after surgery, patients must adhere to a liquid diet for several days. They can then transition to solid foods as the body gradually adjusts to the changes resulting from surgery. Patients are encouraged to get up and move around as soon as they feel able to, to prevent blood clots.
Dr. Kuzinkovas provides detailed instructions for patients to follow after surgery. Advanced Surgicare also offers nutrition and psychological counseling as needed to help patients avoid weight gain following surgery.
Even though it is rarely desired or required, Omega-Loop gastric bypass surgery is reversible.
