Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Do you suffer from morbid obesity? Have you tried to follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen, but have been unsuccessful in your efforts to lose weight? If so, you might be a suitable candidate for sleeve gastrectomy in Sydney with Dr. V. Kuzinkovas, a compassionate weight loss surgeon at Advanced Surgicare.

What Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Entail?

With sleeve gastrectomy, Dr. Kuzinkovas removes about 70 to 80 percent of the stomach, thus restricting the amount of food the patient can eat at one time. Also, removing a substantial portion of the stomach causes the organ to produce less Gherlin, a hormone that stimulates the sensation of hunger. With less of this hunger-inducing hormone, patients have a greater ability to control their appetite and the amount of food consumed. Over time, these qualities help the individual lose weight.

Dr. Kuzinkovas’ preferred surgical approach is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Rather than making one large incision, during this procedure the surgeon makes several small incisions in the treatment area and then inserts long, thin surgical instruments, including a long device with a camera on the end of it that transmits video feed from inside the treatment area onto a screen in the operating room, so the surgeon can see how the procedure is progressing. The laparoscopic approach to surgery is less invasive than conventional “open” surgery, and often requires a shorter recovery period.

Who Is an Appropriate Candidate for the Procedure?

Given that sleeve gastrectomy is an irreversible procedure, this type of bariatric surgery is best suited for individuals who are ready to make a lifelong commitment to leading a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the advanced bariatric procedure is often an appropriate treatment option for individuals who are not suitable candidates for other types of weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass due to certain risk factors, such as an extremely high BMI and specific health conditions such as anemia, lung problems or previous abdominal surgeries.
