Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Offers Safe, Successful Results for Qualifying Candidates

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Sydney

If you are considering weight loss surgery, you may be overwhelmed by your options and your concerns regarding safety and overall success. There are a number of different types of weight loss surgeries, including gastric bypass, Lap Band and gastric sleeve.

Dr V. Kuzinkovas at Advanced Surgicare in Sydney is a certified bariatric surgeon. He specializes in a number of weight loss surgery techniques including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Here, Dr Kuzinkovas explains how Roux-en-Y gastric bypass offers safe, successful results for qualifying candidates.

What Is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a weight loss surgery designed to reduce your food consumption. Dr Kuzinkovas performs the procedure laparoscopically.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass helps patients lose weight in three different ways. First, it reduces the amount of food that a person can consume. Second, it reduces the amount of nutrients that the body can absorb. Third, it alters gut hormone levels, leading to a person feeling more satiated after a small meal.

A regular adult stomach can hold about 1L (or 5 cups) of food. After the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, a patient’s stomach can only hold about 4 to 5 tablespoons of food. This is because, during the procedure, the surgeon decreases the size of the stomach to about the size of an egg.

During surgery, the surgeon also changes the path that food travels through the small intestine. After the procedure, food bypasses the duodenum and a small part of the jejunum (both parts of the small intestine). The bypassed parts no longer come into contact with any food that passes through the body, resulting in fewer calories being absorbed.

Is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Safe?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr Kuzinkovas. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is one of the most common and effective weight loss procedures for patients suffering from morbid obesity.

Keep in mind that just like any medical procedure, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass does have risks. Dr Kuzinkovas will discuss those risks with you and answer any questions that you may have before performing the procedure.
